Mt. Moosilauke
Carriage Road and Glencliff Trail
7.8 miles round-trip
3,300 feet of elevation gain
Moosilauke is one of the mountains I really enjoy hiking. I love the view on the top and all of the rime ice that is up there during the winter! I also have memories of finishing my first round of the 48 Four Thousand Footers on this mountain.
Mom took some great pictures (I couldn't take many because my phone was low on storage again).
Here are Mom and Sage hiking the first part of Glencliff trail! There isn't much snow down below, mainly dirt.
The intersection! I don't remember this way (Glencliff) as much as the usual trail (Gorge Brook) we use to ascend the peak. We're going up Glencliff because of the closed road on the Gorge Brook side. I am liking this so far!
That is the way we are going--across the water.
Mom took the following two images of Sage and me:
Up, up, and up we go! There's snow now...
Even more snow here...
Here is some ice! Mom took this one.
The snow levels increase! The branches of the pines are also covered in snow...
Looking behind me...
Here was the bittersweet moment when my phone ran out of storage--it was partly sweet because we were almost at the top! At least, after this intersection, it didn't feel long until we were at the summit. Mom took most of the rest of the pictures after this one:
A picture of us! Sage is on the left and I am on the right.
Specks of light scattering across the trail...
We're exposed!! It is so beautiful!
Here it started to get windy. We were all cold and hurried along the path up to the summit. It always seems to take less time to hike when you are above tree line!
Sage and I...
Sign up ahead...
The rime ice was awesome! Each strand of it showed where the wind had blown. Some rocks had ice going in all different directions.
Not quite there yet, but almost...
This rime ice was curving downward...
I like this picture! The ground had tiny little rime ice too! All pointing in the relatively same direction, resembling grass...
We are here now! Summit picture! My hair was in my face because of the high wind. Sage and I quickly traveled to the rocky structures which provide wind blockage.
Views...
There we are in the rocky structure! As soon as I sat down, I didn't feel nearly as much wind as before.
This picture I actually took--with my Mom's phone. I wanted to capture a scene of some little rime ice on the ground.
Our last look at the views before descending...
We're down. What a change from the top of the mountain peak!
