Bonds Traverse (10-26-2019)

Union of Concerned Scientists is an organization that fights for climate justice and conducts climate change research. We encourage everyone to visit their website and donate.

Yesterday we did an amazing Bonds Traverse! It was tiring, but we got some beautiful views and great memories! It was also my Trailwrights 72 finish! Here is the link to the YouTube video!

Night Hike of South Carter and Carter Dome, 9/8/2019

South Carter and Carter Dome
9/8/2019
11.6 miles round trip
Around 4000 feet of elevation gain

Hey there, everyone!  I know it's been a while since I have posted a standard blog post with pictures and comments.  I would like to start doing that again in addition to the YouTube videos because I enjoy writing up these reports and I missed regularly making them.

When we can, we night hike on the weekend now, which is helpful since I have so much work this year already.  I was excited to start but also nervous thinking about the possibility of getting out too late; I had this image in my head of us arriving at the second summit while the sky was pitch black.  This did not happen, though, and we reached Carter Dome (our second and final summit for the day) around the time of sunset.  Unfortunately, it was cloudy, so we didn't see as much as we expected.  I hope the view is better next time, but I still enjoyed the hike and how adventurous it felt.

Sage and me on South Carter!

Carter Dome pics ahead!

Pumpkin-flavored Whoopie Pies are truly heaven...

Coming down in headlamps the whole way was an experience!  We have hiked in the dark before, though, so we are used to it by now.  Occasionally I think I see Slenderman in the woods, but I guess my imagination will never turn off when I have to be somewhere dark.

The bright moon through the trees...

The pond by the hut looking mysterious at night...

Done!

A car was passing by...

I had a great time on the hike!  We got back to the car at 10:30 pm.

Sage's Blog: Table Rock

Sage posted about our short hike of Table Rock (on the Terrifying 25).  The ascent was very steep but brief.  In only three tenths of a mile, we were at the top.  The views from the top were gorgeous!  We took a longer route on the way down.  Check out her blog post here.

Sage's New Post: Moriah

As a reminder, Sage and I are taking turns posting about our hikes.  This means I am now publishing blog posts every other week.  We hiked Moriah last Wednesday!  Please check out Sage's corresponding blog post.

Sage is Back! Waumbek on February 26, 2018

Mt. Waumbek

Starr King Trail
 7.2 miles round-trip
2,650 feet of elevation gain

This was Sage's first hike after having had pneumonia.  We took it slowly on the way up; she had trouble at first (her chest hurt), but after the first mile and a half she felt much better.

We got an early start to give Sage plenty of time and to beat the storm that was coming.

I will let the photos do most of the talking for this trip report, as I have a major exam soon and must study!

Summit of Waumbek...

It started snowing as we went down, but the storm didn't hit full force until we were in the car on the way home.

It is good to have Sage with us again!

Snowy North and Middle Tripyramid, 1/4/2018

A common argument climate change deniers have is since the temperatures are low and there is so much snow, climate change can't be happening.  This is a misconception!  To support climate research and to help fight against climate change's negative effects, one must understand how climate change works.  Read about this topic here.  Please donate to UCS to support their research!

Pine Bend Brook Trail, Mt. Tripyramid Trail
9.6 miles round-trip
3,450 feet of elevation gain

Happy New Year!  We hiked the Tripyramids, starting our hike at 5:15 am to avoid the snowstorm that was predicted to occur later in the day.  There were no negative temperatures today, so that made the cold easier to deal with.  As usual, we put on our headlamps and began our ascent!

Please note: my phone went from 100% to 0% to 10% to 95% battery because of the cold, so Mom and I both took pictures just in case my phone would never be reliable.  Thankfully, though, it adjusted to the cold temperatures and started working properly.

Trailhead:

Yes, it was dark...

When the sun came up, I could see the beauty of the trail.  The plus side to hiking in the winter is the snow covers everything, and this makes all of a hiker's natural surroundings even more appealing.  A little later, it started snowing.

Then, Sage took the lead:

After what seemed like an endless incline, we saw the flat summit top of North Tripyramid!  Summit pictures:

After drinking some delicious light eggnog, we hiked to the second summit...

On Middle Tripyramid, there were still no views, just clouds, but the forest was beautiful and everything was white.

A beautiful view of nothing:

By now, it had snowed for a while, so we all had a little bit of snow in our hair.  The density of the snowfall increased as we continued our hike.

Heading back to North Tripyramid...

Gray sky...

Once we got back to North Tripyramid, we had a really fun time on the way down!  We haven't been able to butt slide down peaks in a while because either the snowfall was too light or the incline was too slight.  Today, though, the conditions were perfect for some sliding.  Mom took the picture below of me whizzing away...

Once butt sliding became impossible, Sage and Mom put on their snowshoes (I just carried mine), and we walked the last mile or so back to our car.

Back at the parking lot...

Celebrating our snow-covered selves!  The hike was so fun today, and the peaks were lovely to visit as always.

I hope everyone is enjoying the snow!  I definitely am.
