Mt. Moriah--9/25/2016

Mt. Moriah

Stony Brook Trail and Carter-Moriah Trail

10.0 miles round-trip 

3,150 feet of elevation gain

We hiked with John Myers, a good hiking friend, today.  At first we planned a longer hike, but Sage was sick--she had a bad cough and the sniffles--so we decided it would be wiser to do a hike on the shorter side.

I noticed a bunch of mushrooms growing on a medium-sized tree.  There were even more going up the tree trunk.

Bog bridges!  Some were rotting, but for the most part they were all fairly sturdy.

We came to the intersection.  There were many bog bridges going to the left and the right, as well as some coming from where we hiked up.

There were some green wisps of grass alongside the bridges.

We soon came to the second intersection (it was right around the corner).

Up we go!

There were beautiful views on the way there.

It was a good thing I remembered to look behind me...

We saw a gray jay on top this time, and it acted more timid than gray jays usually are.  There was another bird of a different species hanging around, as well.  We saw that type of bird last time we were on Mt. Moriah, but we hadn't seen the gray jay before.

We saw two grouse on one of the bog bridges, but thankfully they simply wandered off and didn't prevent us from continuing.

I didn't end up solo hiking today, but it was a great (not to mention beautiful) hike!

Mt. Cabot. February 21, 2016

Mt. Cabot

2,400 Feet Elevation Gain

9.6 Miles Round Trip

York Pond Trail, Bunnell Notch Trail, and Kilkenny Ridge Trail

Off to a good start today!  When I step out of the car onto the trail head parking lot (which is in the middle of nowhere), it is surprisingly and refreshingly warm.  We are by ourselves today.

Let's get started!  The first part of the way up Mt. Cabot is flat--here we go.

Taking a short breather and putting my gloves on my polls.  I'm telling you, it's very warm--if it wasn't, I definitely would not be able to leave my gloves off for this long! 

Mom notices the hill sloping upward on the other side--it makes for a good picture.

Yay!  We are almost to the cabin!

There is the bathroom in case we need to go.

Here we are.  I wonder how it looks inside--I haven't hiked Cabot in a while.

The cabin was nice and felt pretty warm!  It was well insulated--except for a jammed window that wouldn't shut.  We then made it to the summit of Cabot--it took longer than we expected from the cabin for some reason.  I'm not sure why. 

Well, we're back at the cabin!  We saved our snacks for inside here.  This is the cheese that we are eating for this mountain peak.  Looks pretty cool!

We're down!  A long drive but a nice mountain.  Back to home!

It was nice to meet Marty, Larry, and their friend (whose name I can't remember, sorry!)
